According to FDA’s July 19 update, five states reported 1,644 confirmed Cyclospora illnesses among people who reported exposure to Taco Bell, including 94 hospitalizations. The FDA noted that these illnesses represent a subset of Cyclospora cases identified nationwide and explained that federal totals may differ from state reports because FDA and CDC include confirmed cases, while states may also report probable cases.
Michigan health officials analyzed detailed food exposures from 190 cases who reported eating at Taco Bell. Their ingredient-level analysis found that 90 percent had eaten iceberg lettuce, and the FDA’s traceback investigation also identified convergence on a single supplier that provided lettuce to locations where patients ate before becoming ill.
Taylor Farms de Mexico announced that it was voluntarily removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the US market. Taylor Fresh Foods also initiated a recall covering Marketside retail products sold at select Walmart stores and a range of products distributed to foodservice customers.

Although outbreak cases were reported in five states, recalled products had a much broader distribution footprint across retail and foodservice channels, and the FDA continues to advise consumers, restaurants, and retailers to discard recalled products while the investigation proceeds.
