Episode 1: Understanding FSMA 204 and its Implications for Food Safety

Together, our hosts discuss the myriad ways in which transparency along the supply chain requires comprehensive systems of traceability across all stakeholders. While consumers expect their food to be safe when they pick out items at a grocery store or restaurant, the reality is that the food had to pass through many hands and company systems that consistently monitor that foods’ route, events, and locations. The FDA has been focused on building stronger food traceability systems for years, and eventually passed the final rule for FSMA 204 at the end of 2022. Now, businesses will have until January 2026 to build traceability plans and begin collecting data on “high-risk” foods that pass through their doors.
Our first expert guest, Julie McGill, has been an active participant on several industry groups and committees and has spent over 16 years at GS1 US building a foundation for traceability and supply chain visibility with various supply chain stakeholders. Some of the committees she has been on include the GS1 US Joint Foodservice and Retail Grocery FSMA 204 Working Group (including contributing to recently published FSMA 204 guidelines leveraging GS1 Standards), RFID Foodservice Supply Chain Visibility Working Group, Supply Chain Optimization Working Group, and the EDI Discussion group. She serves on the Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI) Leadership Council, is co-chair of the PTI Technology Work Group and participates in the PTI FSMA 204 Work Group. Julie also is co-chair of the AIM North America Food Supply Chain Work Group and participates in the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability and GS1 Global GSMP Work Groups.
